Costumes
COSTUME COLLECTION
Asheville Community Theatre has a very – very large costume collection and they are out of space to store it. In fact, the fire marshal has ordered them to disgorge it soon. They are hoping that someone affected by Katrina could use them. There may literally be thousands of items, probably a large truckload, and NCTC is willing to take on the task of transporting it. I know this may be more than anyone can handle, and it may be that it is too soon for such a donation. If so, we might also be able to store it until someone is ready. If you know of anyone in the affected area that could benefit please let me know soon.

Labor of Love
Students at Davidson Fine Arts School in Augusta, GA wanted to do something that would make a difference for Katrinas victims. The students are looking for "broken" donations. Send pieces and parts of lighting, sound and video equipment, soft goods (drapery, scrim, etc.) and any other theatre-related goods. Students will rebuild and repair donations, creating functional items. Next step: Donate them to theatres in the Gulf Coast. Students get hands-on experience while theatres get equipment they desperately need.

Education/Students
Wayne State University [Graduate Design]
I'm head of Graduate Design at Wayne State University / Hilberry Repertory Theatre. Universities are odd animals and its tough to say what WSU would be willing to let us do, but I know there's been some movement to help Katrina displaced students on the undergrad level.

I'm not certain who this may reach, but I know we have several openings - 2 scenic, 1 costume, 2 lighting in our M.F.A. programs. The issues of transferrable credits and getting started for the fall 05 term would need to be addressed, but I'm willing to try for anyone out there who is interested.

We offer full assistantships to all MFA students. Coverage for all tuition, medical/Dental benefits, and about $11000 as a stipend. We're very production oriented - not a conservatory - three year program. More details at: http://www.theatre.wayne.edu/graduate.php

If you're interested, contact me. We'll start the exploration together. We are one week into classes, and have already opened one production, so please act quickly if you're looking.

Other Efforts

For those who are interested, SETC has begun a drive for resources to reconstruct the theatres in the region. I'll help however I can in this effort, starting with this link.
SETC Donation/Needs Page

Over at Backstagejobs.com, Patrick has come up with an idea to get our skilled hands down there to help. Check out ReStaging the Gulf for more info.

Another listing of resources and needs is available from Craigslist. Have a look.
